“It is time for parents to teach young people that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.”
Kids these days
- Does parenting feel like a challenge sometimes?
- Do you deeply feel your child’s pain and difficulties?
- Do you wish you could help your child feel less anxious and angry?
- Do you worry about your child fitting in at school or the world at large?
- Is your child just a bit different to most other children?
You are not alone. Raising children can be the most loving and rewarding thing we can ever do but parenthood can also be a challenge, especially because we often acutely feel our children’s joy and pain, their highs and lows. If our children are happy so are we, but if they are struggling we also really feel it.
Furthermore, children and our young adults are changing, with increasing numbers of children diagnosed as ADHD/Aspergers/ASD and an even larger number of children feeling overwhelmed, anxious, angry and argumentative, disconnected or dreamy, or who may be bucking the system or pushing back at the world they see. The term ‘Indigo Children’ is a useful phrase to describe these type of children – the ones who don’t fit in as easily into our mainstream systems, such as education – and who often need additional support to learn in a conventional manner.
These children can genuinely struggle to control their reactions or focus their attention without help. They often want to change how they feel or respond, but may not know how. I believe children are all fundamentally good and their amazing brains and alternative ways of thinking need to be nurtured.
Mainstream education by it’s very nature can’t support the needs of all children, but this is especially true with respect to the indigos. We think we need to try to ‘fix’ our children to be more mainstream, but I would suggest that they don’t need fixing, instead we should change our approach to education and equip these kids with the life skills that they need to be themselves, to flourish and to thrive.
Indigo children are often exceptionally good at seeing the flaws in broken or inauthentic systems, refusing to co-operate with them. In not tolerating the status quo, they are our best opportunity for creating change.
Supporting you and your child
As a parent, if you would like to:
- Feel okay, irrespective of whether your child is happy or not
- Understand your child – why/how they think and act like they do
- Let go of your fears and anxieties
- Stay calmer when faced with a meltdown
- Learn how to respond rather than react in the moment
- See the best in your child more often
Or, if you would like to enable your child to:
- Feel less anxious
- Find ways to remain calm
- Have better focus and find it easier to learn
- Believe in themselves
- Have more self-confidence
- Manage anger better
Then let’s have a conversation to discuss what is going on for you and to see how we could work together!

“Since Julia has worked with us I now have a different child at home. His depression symptoms are gone and he starts his day singing, always smiling, thinking positively. His life at school has changed too. Before the treatment, he wasn’t able to get a better test score than a D, even though he spent lots of time studying. After his first meeting with Julia he got his first A, and now he only gets A! His view of the future is good and his self-confidence has grown. I don’t hear from him now “I can’t, I’m not able, I won’t achieve anything …” Last Saturday he won a Silver medal in a Cross-Country competition for the first time as an individual. His trainer told me that he has made huge progress and has changed himself very much. Thank you so much!”
